ASTRONAUTS LAND AT LEICESTER

This year marks the 15th anniversary of Space School UK and during this special year, Digby Hall will once again be home to up to 200 aspiring astronauts and scientists. These aspirations clearly become a reality with former students now working for organisations such as NASA and the European Space Agency.

Carefully selecting lecture theatres at the City Campus ensures the lectures and workshops take place in the most conducive surroundings. Lecture topics range from robotics and astronomy to remote sensing and space medicine, plus practical workshops on rocket and satellite building, students have the opportunity to broaden their knowledge of science and technology as well as get a taste of what it is like to work in space exploration. Lectures are also given by visiting astronauts such as Jeff Hoffman (whose mission was to repair the Hubble telescope in outer space) and other leading speakers.

Students are able to relax at the end of the day in Digby House; a stunning period house set amongst beautiful landscaped gardens with accommodation and dining close by and just minutes from the extensive sports facilities on site. A comprehensive programme is arranged for the students to maximise their leisure time, such as, barbecues and discos and in addition, the organiser arranges a rocket building competition throughout the week, where launches take place on the final day on our sports field.

“I am happy to bring the SSUK students to Digby Hall twice a year as the facilities are suitable for all ages. Junior Space School have the easy access to the Botanical Gardens for their environmental research whilst the Seniors can enjoy the social and leisure activities planned for them. The staff are always on hand to help and assist where necessary and they even plan special menus to go with the theme of the school.
