Guests and delegates at Chancellors Hotel and Conference Centre in Manchester were shocked when a team of SAS commandos started abseiling down the walls of the building… moments before smashing through the windows, leaving one soldier engulfed in flames.
But these dramatic scenes were only part of a documentary series for the National Geographic channel: the show was a reconstruction of the terrible Iranian embassy siege in London 26 years ago.
The site was officially opened as Chancellors, a dedicated all year round hotel and conference centre in 1997.
The documentary dramatisation aims to recapture the atmosphere of the siege and forms part of a documentary series called “Extreme Rescue”.
Catherine Murphy, Sales Manager at Chancellors Hotel and Conference Centre, said:
“We are excited that Chancellors was chosen to film the reconstruction of one of the most important moments of recent British history. Since it was originally built -more than 150 years ago- the venue has been steeped in history and we are delighted that the venue is continuing in such a prominent role within the city.”
